Frequently Asked Questions

Q:
How long is one lesson?
A:
One lesson is generally one hour long, but this is not set in stone. If it is close to exams by all means book double lessons. Our tutors can bill in half hour increments. E.g. 1.5 or 2.5 lessons can be deducted from your package if required.
Q:
What if there is more than one learner in a lesson?
A:
Our tutors can accommodate a maximum of 3 learners in a lesson, provided that:
a) If Primary School learners, all learners are in the same grade and
b) If High School learners, all learners are in the same grade and require lessons in the same subject.
We charge the first learner at full price and the 2nd or 3rd learner in the lesson is charged at a discounted rate, please enquire regarding prices.
Q:
Can the tutor work with my child's syllabus?
A:
The beauty of 1-on-1 tuition is that our tutors can quickly adapt to new or changed syllabi. Our tutors can assist government school, private school, home school or even Cambridge based learners. Our tutors are comfortable adapting to restructured FET (Further Education & Training) syllabi.
Q:
Who are your tutors?
A:
Our tutors are young, bright university students with innate teaching and facilitating abilities. All Hire Education tutors are screened, assessed and trained to ensure the highest possible quality of tutor. Our tutors are not only assessed on their ability to understand the work themselves but also on their ability to teach the work and convey understanding. We pride ourselves in having the strictest and most comprehensive training & assessment processes in our industry. The result – we have the best tutors!
Q:
Can our lessons replace the classroom?
A:
The lessons provided are usually in conjunction with an existing syllabus provided by a school or education institution. Our tutor's role ranges from filling in gaps to re-explaining or teaching entire sections.
Q:
Is our service suited to learners with learning problems?
A:
What better way to assist with a learning problem than though individual attention, which is exactly what our service offers. Our tutors are not professional remedial therapists or educational psychologists, but are happy to liaise and work directly with or use guidelines set out by professionals such as these. We can refer you to a remedial therapist or educational psychologist if necessary.
Q:
Do we provide reference materials?
A:
Our tutors are not restricted to one set of reference materials (such as a particular study guide, textbook or computer/web application). They have the freedom to choose what works best for them and their learners on a case-by-case basis. It is best to have prescribed textbooks available at lessons so tutors can maximise the understanding tailored to that particular textbooks methodogy.

If necessary, tutors will recommend additional textbooks, study guides or online resources/programs to supplement the prescribed textbooks or reference materials.
Q:
Do I need a qualified teacher?
A:
A qualified teacher is not necessarily the best way to improve a learner's understanding, confidence and motivation in a subject. In fact, a university student (of a similar age) to the learner can be a better option than a qualified teacher. Our aim is to foster a mentoring relationship as opposed to a teacher-student relationship. In terms of extra lessons outside of existing schooling environment, we find the learners are able to relate better to university students and that this helps to facilitate the learning process.
Q:
Will my child become dependant on the tutors?
A:
Our tutor's goal is to empower learners to work by themselves. Often, they only see the learner once per week, so it's absolutely necessary to get the learner working by themselves. The reality of the situation is that the tutors can't sit in exams with learners, so learners need to be empowered to handle this kind of stressful school situation by themselves.
Q:
How do I make payment?
A:
Payment for the packages is required upfront. The preferred method of payment is a direct deposit or an EFT (electronic funds transfer). Alternatively you can pay the tutor directly for a package with cash or cheque on the first lesson. An invoice with bank details is provided electronically or alternatively via fax/post once the first lesson has been booked. We do not require payment until we have booked the first lesson and sent this invoice.
Q:
Do I schedule directly with my tutor?
A:
Yes, we find dealing directly with your tutor is the most efficient way to handle the scheduling of lessons. Contact details for your tutor/s will be provided.
