What to do During the School Holidays

The school holidays are almost upon us, but for most of us they might not provide the temporary relief from our insane schedules that we hoped. Sure, two weeks of no traffic is great, but the main question on your mind will probably be - what to do with the kids?

How do you keep your childs brain working and ensure that they don't forget everything learnt in the previous term?

Extra Lessons Now Available for University Learners

We at Hire Education have been tutoring both primary and high school learners across South Africa for 7 years and thought it was about time to expand our horizons. In the past we have tried our best to accomodate requests for tutors for certain university subjects but have now made the tutoring service for 1st year university learners official :)

If you or someone you know is struggling to grasp concepts, or even just get through the workload of a 1st year university subject, then we are here to help!

Our tutors provide extra lessons with the individual attention you need to fill in gaps and clarify concepts. Once the first lesson is booked, your tutor will travel to your home or a convenient place of your choice to assist you with specific subjects such as Intro to Accounting, Financial Accounting, Economics and Stats.

We know that there are many learners out there who did not do subjects such as Accounting or Economics at High School, yet they are subjects that appear in so many 1st year university courses. This is where tutoring can be a huge help.

Our Tutors Make Joburg Great!

At the end of last year we were privileged enough to catch some of our tutors before they went on holiday to join us for an end of year tutor social. This is our way of thanking our tutors for all the hard work they have put into their tutoring.

The day started out being hot and sunny and we managed to have our prizegiving and a few rounds of our quiz before the rain hit. I was really impressed with the general knowledge of our tutors after they answered some really tough questions correctly, such as:

What is a single unit of quanta called?

The answer? A Quantrum

But of course that is the calibre of tutors that we are lucky to have as part of the Hire Education team.

Although we currently have great tutors in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town, I managed to get in touch with the guys who run the initiative You Make Joburg Great (YMJG) to spread some awareness about our tutors in Joburg as they are definately making Joburg great!

I truly believe and I know our customers would agree that all of our tutors are making not only Joburg but South Africa great as well.

Footprint in Cape Town

In July I spent an amazing week in Cape Town setting up the footprint for Hire Education. Despite an early and freezing cold start on Monday morning, leaving for Lanseria airport at 5am, I was pleasantly surprised to land in a beautiful sunny Cape Town a few hours later. I think I must have taken the sunshine with me from Joburg as there had been terrible weather in Cape Town the week before and as soon as I left Joburg’s weather seemed to go from bad to worse! Maybe it had something to do with being my first time in Cape Town and the weather gods smiling down on me or maybe it was just pure good luck!

Tuesday was a busy day for me as I had to interview and choose Hire Education’s first Tutor Manager. I managed to set up shop (laptop, books, papers and all!) at the Mugg and Bean in the Paddocks Shopping Centre in Milnerton; who I must say were extremely accomodating.

I had some really strong candidates apply for the Tutor Manager position, the strongest of which being Elaine Lunn who has over 15 years teaching experience as well as knowledge and skills in recruitment and training. We are extremely excited to have Elaine on the team and to see what Hire Education can accomplish with her running things on the ground in Cape Town.

Wednesday afternoon I experienced the most spectacular sunset on top of Table Mountain after a long and productive day training Elaine in her new role. The weather on Thursday morning seemed to cloud over slightly but cleared up again by the afternoon when Elaine and I started interviewing new tutors.

By Friday the week had flown past and I was ready to eat some fancy food. A friend and I went for dinner at Jardines on Bree Street and all I can say is WOW! The ambience was amazing and the food was out of this world.

On Sunday I was lucky enough to go on a wine tour to a few different estates. My favourite estate was Zewenwacht and I think what made the tour all the more enjoyable was our self professed crazy German tour guide.

Monday morning I managed to catch my flight back to Joburg on time, despite the GPS sending me around in circles on the highway (something the “mountain” couldn’t help me with!). As they say, there is no rest for the wicked and I arrived back at the office on Monday midmorning with Cape Town fired up and ready to go and since then we have subsequently hired more tutors and booked our first Cape Town customer.

New Branded Website

We have been working tirelessly on coming up with a new brand this year. Fortunately we found a great designer (Mia Allers) who knew where to start. Mia pushed us to ask ourselves, who are we and what are we about. What a valuable and insightful process!

Once we figured out who we were, we started the conceptualizing and design process. What did we come up with? You are looking at it! This new website is the crowning achievement of our entire re-branding process.

The process looked something like this:

• Figure out who we are and what we’re about – Give our brand a personality

• Decide on main colours and supporting colours surround our brand

• Very importantly come up with a new logo and tagline (our new tagline is “In a class of our own”, clever hey)

• Get all collateral in place (business cards, brochures, email signatures, etc)

• And lastly build a new website reflecting our new brand (with the help of our fantastic web developers Dynamikos

Our new website is not only a reflection of our new brand, but has become central to our marketing strategy going forward. Customers are now provided with new convenient functionality including:

• even Sign up online!
